My Latest Purchase!

I have just returned from a lovely trip to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales! Although a little chilly, it was still a lovely break!

(This was our back garden!)

Whilst I was away I made two purchases...

My first was of this lovely set I rescued of Jane Austen's novels (The Folio Society edition). As well as the 6 novels, there is a lovely 7th book which contains all her shorter and unfinished works which is nice to have them all in one book - the only thing missing is her letters.

And secondly, I was finally able to spend the money I had been saving up on a regency writing slope, c1820!

I saw a few writing desks in an antique shop in Yorkshire last summer when I went, and I decided that I would save up and buy one when I went again the following April - and I did!

A Regency writing desk which belonged to this V. Warren Low who I am going to try and find out more about - it is thought that he was a military man!

The Kingwood the desk is made of is rare and unusual and it's in wonderful condition.

I have filled it with my own - modern - writing things... (I will be on the look out for some more authentic stationary to fill it with though!)

I've got my ink well, a quill and some blotting paper and wax and a seal...

My writing paper and envelopes in there...

And my current letters - I have a few regular pen friends - which I need to reply to in there!

It is a shame all my things look so modern!

  2. Those are absolute treasures, Soph! The writing desk is simply adorable and the set of Jane Austen's novels is lovely! And it's useful to have all of her incomplete works together in one book ;) Moreover, I loooove the first picture!! It's beautiful :) Did you really see that from your window?? It looks like a scene from a movie! Austen inspired, of course ;) Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes that was our back garden Maria! :D it was lovely! It was a great place for a Marianne moment - walking in the rain! But no dashing young man on a horse came along unfortunately! Glad you like my purchases!

  3. What a wonderful gift to give yourself. I particularly love the writing desk. Letters played such a pivotal role in Jane Austen's stories. And, how fun to imagine that Mr. Low might have personally exchanged letters with someone who knew our favorite author. It was such a simpler life then and I adore what it represents. Much better than a knew IPad or android, which will be outdated quickly. Your writing desk will never go the way of technology. I am happy for you, Sophie.

    1. Thank you very much! I really don't think you can beat hand written letters! They say so much more than just an email! And letters are such important parts of Jane Austen's stories! There are so many which play such an important part to the story! I love to think this V Warren Low could have exchanged such letters!

  4. I have the same set of books but mine are in a pale blue, and I have always wanted a writing desk like that

    1. I saw them in another shop in blue, but they were more expensive so I went for the red set (even though I actually prefer the blue ones!)

    1. It is the writing desk - you open it and it becoming the slope :) it's not inside it as such, it is it :) you open it and it opens in half and forms the slope which you can see in the other pictures. :) it is lucky I have pen friends!
